Hair and Beauty Curriculum Plans

Year 9 Autumn

An introduction to the hair & beauty industry.

The practical techniques in hair trends and curling.

Gain understanding of business ownerships and the relevant health and safety legislation.

Introductory understanding of hair treatments and products on the market.

Written answers show detailed understanding of each of the exam criteria; for example the business ownership module.

Students will apply their practical skills in creating a variety of curling styles and client requests. Students will develop their skills in observing others and providing constructive feedback.

Students will sit a formal test at the end of each of the five units.

These tests are compiled from past exam papers.

Year 9 Spring

Theory: Understanding the Hair and Beauty Sector

Students will continue to study the Hair and Beauty Industry. They will gain knowledge about the different business ownerships and how the Hair and Beauty Industry supports the UK Economy. 

Students will be able to answer exam style questions confidentially. They will be able to explain and identify the different types of business ownerships, highlighting the pros and cons of them all.

Students will partake in mini assessments throughout the term, assessing their knowledge through exam style questions.

Practical: Continuing Facials and Introduction to Hair

Students will continue to develop practical skills and knowledge of different facial and hair products. They will also engage in practical lessons; studying how hair trends have changed throughout the times, recreating some iconic styles. This will help to develop students understanding of how treatments need to be adapted, depending on the client and context.

Students will actively partake in lessons and practice new skills on each other.  Students extended knowledge of products will mean they will be able to adapt the treatment to meet the client’s diverse needs and requirements. 

Students will partake in mini assessments throughout the term, assessing their knowledge through exam style questions.

Theory: Understanding the Hair and Beauty Sector

Exam Skills

Students will continue to study the Hair and Beauty Industry. They will gain knowledge about the career pathways and the differences between them. Students will continue developing their knowledge on how the Hair and Beauty Industry supports the UK Economy.

Students will be able to answer exam style questions confidently. They will be able to explain and identify the different career pathways available, along with business ownership pros and cons.

Students will partake in mini assessments throughout the term, assessing their knowledge through exam style questions.

Practical: Makeup Techniques

Students will continue to develop practical skills and knowledge of different makeup products and skin types. They will also engage in practical lessons; studying how makeup trends have changed throughout eras, recreating some iconic looks. This will help to develop students understanding of how treatments need to be adapted, depending on the client and context.

Students will actively partake in lessons and practice new skills on each other.  Students extended knowledge of products will mean they are able to adapt the treatment to meet the clients diverse needs and requirements.

Students will partake in mini assessments throughout the term, assessing their knowledge through exam style questions.

Science Unit Coursework

This unit further develops knowledge of the hair and beauty industry for future examination.

 

Students will gain understanding of business ownerships and the relevant health & safety legislation.

Introductory understanding of hair treatments and products on the market.

Students demonstrate their understanding of key business ownership concepts through written work and discussion.

Coursework is completed to a high standard, meeting the exam board success criteria.

Students develop observational and evaluative skills, providing peers with constructive criticism and acting on feedback to improve their work.

Internal assessment of official coursework. This will be moderated by VTCT.

Students will continue to develop practical skills and knowledge of different makeup products. They will also engage in practical lessons; studying how makeup trends have changed through the years and, re-creating some iconic styles. This will help to develop students understanding of how treatments need to be adapted, depending on the client. 

Students will actively partake in lessons and practice new skills on each other.  Students extended knowledge of products will mean they will be able to adapt the treatment to meet the clients’ needs and requirements.

Students will continue to study the Hair and Beauty Industry. They will gain knowledge about the different business ownerships and how the Hair and Beauty Industry supports the UK Economy. We will begin looking into career pathways and options available in the future.

Students will be able to answer exam style questions confidently. They will be able to explain and identify the different types of business ownerships; highlighting the pros and cons of them all.

Students will be partake in mini assessments throughout the term; testing their knowledge through exam style questions.

Practical: Develop skills in nail art techniques

Students will continue to develop their practical skills and knowledge of different manicure products. They will also engage in practical lessons; studying how trends have changed throughout the years. This will help to develop students understanding of how treatments need to be adapted, depending on the client.

Students will actively partake in lessons and practice new skills on each other.  Students extended knowledge of products will mean they will be able to adapt the treatment to meet the clients’ needs and requirements.

Year 11 Autumn

Completing the final Coursework unit; Responding to a Design Brief.

Practically this will involve using an individualised template to create an overall look, for a certain occasion.

 

Students will gain an understanding of the feasibility of the importance of client needs. They will develop their knowledge on the different structures of design briefs, based on client requirements.

Students respond confidently to written assessments on each exam criteria; for example the business ownership module.

Coursework is completed to a high standard, meeting the criteria for VTCT and demonstrating originality and flair.

Students develop their skills in observing others and providing constructive feedback.

Internal assessment of official coursework. This will be moderated by VTCT.

Year 11 Spring

Developing practical skills in hair, makeup and nail art.

Students will learn about the different genres in the Hair and Beauty Industry which have now become iconic. They will be able to re-create the look in practical sessions.

Students will be able to develop looks from design template to person.

Students will be able to adapt iconic looks to suit their clients’ needs and requirements. 

Students will be assessed through mini-tests to grade their product knowledge on the different genres.
