iMatter As An English Student

INTENT

iMatter as an English student because English nurtures the enjoyment of both literature and language, introducing me to texts that challenge and encourage me to think analytically and creatively. I will learn to be communicative and imaginative and I will be able to use the richness of my language to establish strong and meaningful bonds in my work life and my personal life.

Year 7

I will be studying the writer’s craft through looking at various fictional extracts and then using what I have learnt in my own writing. I will study elements of a Shakespeare play and understand how language and imagery are used to create meaning. I will read a 19th Century novel and explore the impact that context can have on a writer’s creation, this will lead me to analyse a selection of war poetry exploring the language and context of each.

Year 8

I consolidate my understanding of a text’s context through the study of a Shakespearean tragedy, focusing on the presentation of characters. I will look at a selection of 19th century short stories and be able to evaluate how writers use language and structure to impact their readers. I will be able to securely demonstrate my understanding of persuasive and argumentative forms of writing and replicate this in my own creative assessments.

Year 9

I will study how writers of fictional texts use structure to enhance meaning in their writing. I will be able to successfully analyse how language and its connotations impact the response of a reader and be able to securely recognise and comment on the methods that a writer employs, using accurate subject terminology. I will develop the skills to compare the content of two non-fiction texts. I will build on my writing skills to be able to produce high level pieces of writing under timed conditions.

Year 10

I will study a whole Shakespeare play and be able to clearly understand the relevance of context on the themes and characters created. I will use my understanding of 19th Century literature to read and explore a pre 20th century novel and learn how to analyse the structural features of a whole text. I will study a selection of poetry and be able to comment on the individual poet’s choice of language, imagery and form using accurate subject terminology.

Year 11

I will confidently revisit and revise all elements of the english language and literature examinations drawing on my prior learning, developing my understanding through independent study. I will show perception when analysing fiction and non-fiction texts and will draw on all that I have read to impact my own writing. I will be able to accurately assess my own and others writing using the relevant marking scheme. I will confidently be able to sit my language and literature exams.
