Daily Update

5 June 2020

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope you have had a good day.

Phase 1 - Reopening of The Deanes - Provision for Next Week

We are asking for parents / carers  who are critical workers or who have children that are classed as vulnerable to let us know if they are sending their child into school next week.  Those who have been at school this week will already have received a text message.

However, if your intention is for your child to attend school next week and have not yet received a text, please follow this two part procedure:

1)  Complete this survey https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/Deanes-Phase1/.

2) Once we have assessed your request and verified that your child is able to attend, you will receive a text message / email asking you to detail the days you child will be in school and you will be asked to agree to and sign a Home / School Agreement.  This agreement outlines what our provision in school will be and our expectations of parents and children accessing our provision.  It has been put in place to ensure the safety of all children and staff.

I wish to stress that parents/carers retain the authority to decide whether school is an appropriate environment for their children. Parents will not be fined for non-attendance at this time, and schools will not be held to account for attendance levels.

I understand that many parents and carers may feel anxious about their child returning to school. Below this email you will find more information about how the school day will be organised so that you can make an informed decision about whether you send your child to school.

Phase 2 - Year 10

From 15 June 2020, the Government are requiring secondary schools to offer some face-to-face support to supplement the remote education of Year 10 students, which should remain the predominant mode of education during this term.  The guidance is quite stringent and we will be following it very closely.

Therefore, we are inviting Year 10 students into school for a two hour session per week in order to support their Distance Learning.  Each student will be allocated to a group and they will remain in that group throughout.  Uniforms should not be worn and no equipment will be given out.  These measures will be in place to ensure no potential spread of Covid-19 between groups.

Over a four week period, they will have an English session, a Maths session, a Science session and a Review meeting.

The sessions will run as follows:

I will email Year 10 students and parents over the weekend with further details regard the group they are in and how to sign up for these face-to-face sessions.  I will require each student and their parent to sign a home/school agreement which outlines what our provision in school will be and our expectations of parents and children accessing our provision.  It has been put in place to ensure the safety of all children and staff.

Distance Learning - Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9

I will be sending an email over the weekend regarding work for students while they remain at home. We are currently finalising the next fortnight's worth of Distance Learning and suggestions for things to do.  This will be ready and updated in time for Monday morning and will be in the timetabled format that several of you have praised.

It is worth noting that Year 9 will be expected to complete their mock exams at home during the fortnight beginning 22 June 2020.  We will be posting the mock examinations to each student.  I will send more details nearer the time.  In the meantime, the work available from Monday will help the students prepare and revision for these mock examinations.

Distance Learning - Year 10

This week, as part of the virtual Work Experience and Careers Education, students have researched a company of their choice and taken part in live career related talks.  They have created their own CV's, researched their dream job and listened to others and their career stories.  They are now in the process of sending their work for employer feedback and will all receive a certificate of completion.  This will recognise their efforts to complete Virtual Work experience in the absence of the 'real' experience this year.  I would like to congratulate all the students for your enthusiasm with this initiative and also to Miss Fanning and Mrs Blake for ensuring that everything ran smoothly.

From Monday, a timetabled set of Distance Learning activities will be made available for Year 10.  As detailed above, Year 10 will also have several face-to-face sessions to supplement their learning.

We will also be emailing their mock results to the students and their parents on or around 17 June 2020.
