World Music Workshop

13 June 2017

The year 9 and 10 GCSE Music class at The Deanes were proud to welcome Jonathan Mayer and Efua Sey on Tuesday who led two exceptional World Music Workshops. Jonathan introduced the class to the Sitar, Tambura, Bansuri and Ektar, and allowed students to try out the instruments whilst learning about the culture and music of Northern-India. Efua lead a hands-on session on African djembe drums, and is going to be taking students on a musical tour of Africa in her remaining sessions. Strings & Drums is a World Music project funded by Essex Music Education Hub (lead by Essex County Council) comprising of six 2-hour workshops. The project gives children and young people across Castle Point and Canvey Island area an opportunity to experience World Music to compose, perform using percussion and stringed instruments from across the world. Students commented that the sessions were “so much fun” and “it’s really allowed us to learn about the world of music, as well as teaching us about our culture”.  Thank you so much for this wonderful opportunity – we can’t wait for the remaining four sessions!
