statutory guidance

Updated guidance on careers guidance and access for education and training providers can be found here.

Part of the statutory guidance for schools is the requirement to meet the 8 ‘Gatsby Benchmarks’ by the end of 2020.  We make use of the ‘Career and Enterprise Company’s’ ‘Compass Tool’ to monitor our progress towards these benchmarks.  With our two week Work Experience placements for all Year 10 students, access to an independent and impartial careers adviser and on-site experiences such as visits from guest speakers, we are already fully compliant with 7 of these benchmarks. Progress towards fully achieving the other benchmark is well underway.

The Academy’s Provider Access Policy clearly includes how the school proposes to comply with the obligations of the Baker Clause. The purpose of the Baker Clause was to ensure that there is an opportunity for colleges and other training providers to access Y8-Y13 students for the purpose of informing them about approved technical education qualifications and apprenticeships. At The Deanes, for many years,  we have consciously promoted the range of options at post 16 and beyond through: assemblies, career fairs, lessons and information provided to students and information to parents/ on our school webpage.

We make use of destination data, monitoring and student voice to measure and assess the impact of our careers programme on our students.

Our careers website information is reviewed annually. The date of the next review is December 2022.

The gatsby benchmarks

At The Deanes, we use the ‘Compass evaluation tool’ to assess ongoing progress of our Careers Programme in relation to the eight Gatsby Benchmarks.

  1. A stable careers programme

Our schoolswill have an embedded programme of career education and guidance that is known and understood by students, parents, teachers, governors and employers.
  2. Learning from career and labour market informtion (LMI)

Every student, and their parents, will have access to good quality information about future study options and labour market opportunities, that is relevant to our local area, supported by an informed adviser to make best use of available information.
  3. Addressing the need of each student

Students have different career guidance needs at different stages. Opportunities for advice and support need to be tailored to the needs of each student. Our school’s careers programme should embed equality and diversity considerations throughout.
  4. Linking curriculum learning to careers

All teachers will link curriculum learning with careers where possible. STEM subject teachers will highlight the relevance of STEM subjects for a wide range of future career paths where lesson opportunities present themselves.
  5. Encounters with employers and employees

Every student will have multiple opportunities to learn from employers about work, employment and the skills that are valued in the workplace, in particular within curriculum lessons, at least one per year.
  6. Experiences of workplaces

Every student will have first-hand experiences of the workplace through work visits, work shadowing and/or work experience to help their exploration of career opportunities, and expand their networks.
  7. Encounters with further and higher education

All students will understand the full range of learning opportunities that are available to them. This includes both academic and vocational routes and learning in schools, colleges, universities and in the workplace.
  8. Personal guidance

Every student will have opportunities for guidance interviews with a career adviser, who is trained at Level 6 or higher, whenever significant study or career choices are being made. These interviews will be expected for all students but should be timed to meet their individual needs.

access to information about careers

The Deanes careers programme is committed to developing a whole school approach in providing every student with up to date, impartial, independent and varied careers education, information, advice and guidance defined by the CDI framework and Gatsby standards. This will help to ensure that each student has high aspirations and is fully prepared for their next steps in education, training and employment beyond their time at The Deanes.

unifrog

Unifrog is a universal destinations platform that helps students to compare every university course, apprenticeship and Further Education courses and then apply successfully.  Unifrog is used across Year 7 - 11 and all students have their own accounts which they can access at school and at home.
