Session 2
Session 3
Setting up the Board
Check and Checkmatting
Castling
In our first session, students will learn how to correctly set up a chessboard and become familiar with each piece and its starting position. We'll explain how to orient the board with the "white square on the right" rule and introduce the names and basic roles of pawns, rooks, knights, bishops, queens, and kings. Students will also be introduced to the concept of chessboard coordinates (like e4 or d5) to help build their understanding of notation and spatial awareness. By the end of the session, they will be able to confidently set up a chessboard and recognize where each piece belongs.
This session focuses on the essential concepts of check and checkmate — the foundation of how a chess game is won. Students will learn what it means to put a king in check and the legal ways to respond, including blocking, moving the king, or capturing the attacking piece. We'll then explore the idea of checkmate, using simple examples to help students recognize how to trap the king with no escape. Through guided practice, students will learn how to both deliver and defend against checkmates, building awareness of threats on the board.
In Session 3, students will learn the special move called castling — a unique move involving both the king and rook. We’ll explain the rules required to castle legally: neither the king nor the chosen rook can have moved, the squares between them must be empty, and the king must not move through or into check. Students will practice both kingside and queenside castling and understand why this move is important for king safety and rook development. Practical board exercises will help reinforce when and why to castle during real games.
Session 4
Session 5
Promotion and En Passant
Playing the Game
In this session, we’ll introduce one of the most misunderstood and fascinating rules in chess: en passant. Students will learn that this special capture only occurs when a pawn moves two squares forward from its starting position and lands next to an opponent’s pawn. The capturing pawn then has the option to take it “in passing,” as if it had moved just one square. We'll break it down with clear visuals and board demonstrations and give students time to practice recognising and using en passant in guided play. Furthermore, we will also learn about pawn promotion — an exciting rule that rewards pawns that reach the opposite end of the board, it can be promoted to any piece, usually a queen. We’ll explore why a player might choose a different piece (such as underpromoting to a knight for tactical reasons) and look at real examples where promotion leads to a win. Students will also play fun mini-games where the goal is to race pawns across the board to promote them first.
Our final session brings everything together as students put their knowledge into practice by playing full games of chess. We'll begin with a quick review of all the special moves and rules covered in previous sessions, then pair students to play structured matches with guidance from instructors. This session emphasises not just the rules, but also strategic thinking, sportsmanship, and learning through experience.

Staying Calm, Acting Smart
This session introduces students to the purpose and principles of first aid, building a strong foundation for the series ahead. Learners will explore what first aid involves, when it should be used, and why quick, calm responses matter in emergencies. Emphasis is placed on hygiene, including correct handwashing techniques and the safe use of gloves, to reduce infection risk when helping others.
In this session, students are introduced to the DRS ABC framework and taught how to safely assess a casualty and perform CPR. They will learn the steps to follow when someone is unresponsive and not breathing, including calling emergency services, delivering chest compressions, and (where appropriate) rescue breaths. Practical application using CPR manikins helps students build confidence in performing life-saving techniques.
Students develop their understanding of how to manage common first aid incidents such as minor cuts, burns, sprains, and fainting. Through discussion, demonstrations, and hands-on activities, they learn how to stay calm and apply basic treatment safely and effectively. The recovery position is introduced and practised, reinforcing the importance of monitoring consciousness and breathing in responsive casualties.

This session focuses on responding to more serious bleeding injuries and recognising the signs of shock. Students learn how to apply direct pressure, elevate a wound, and use dressings to control blood loss. They also explore how the body reacts to significant blood loss and how to manage a casualty experiencing shock. Realistic simulations provide an opportunity to practise effective bleeding control in a controlled environment.
In the final session, students apply all their learning through practical, scenario-based challenges. Working in small teams, they rotate through realistic first aid simulations, including CPR, burns, bleeding, and recovery position tasks. This session encourages problem-solving, teamwork, and reflection, giving students a chance to showcase their skills and receive constructive feedback. It concludes with a review and celebration of progress made across the series.
