Year 7 Curriculum plans

Autumn

Drama Skills

Students will be using and developing performance skills as individuals, as well as collaborating in small and larger groups.  Performance skills will encompass vocal skills of pace, volume and intonation, physical skills of gesture, posture, facial expression and body language alongside observation, listening and audience awareness.  Students will demonstrate high level performance skills and work confidently as individuals and with others. Students will use their newly developed skills to explore various forms of drama. Students will be assessed on their understanding through an extended writing task.

Autumn

Character Students will use performance skills to communicate a character based on a stimulus. They will work as individuals and in pairs to explore how characters interact with each other.  Performance skills will include vocal skills such as volume, pace and tone, physical skills such as facial expression, body language and gesture and rehearsal. Students will present confident roles in performance highlighting a creative approach and demonstrate an understanding of how different styles of character are created and performed for an audience. Students will be assessed practically on their creativity and performance skills.

Autumn

History of Theatre Recognising how theatre of the past has shaped drama today. Individual and small group devising work.  Drama skills will include characterisation, devising, creating dialogue and monologue, script work, choral speaking, role-play and performance. Confident students who plan their pieces using the information they have gathered. Students will be able to show an understanding of their role through their individual performances.  Students will be assessed through performances each lesson. Students will be assessed on their vocal and physical skills, character and communication and artistic intentions. Students will also be assessed each lesson on their ability to write about their experiences. 

Autumn

Learning plays Devising project

Students will identify issues and dramatise them in an effective manner, in order to provoke thought from an audience. Students will find creative and interesting ways of using drama techniques within their pieces.

Drama techniques studied in this unit will be freeze frames, monologues, forum theatre, cross-cutting, marking the moment, and narration.

Confident students who are able to work well as individuals and with others. Students make judgments about their personal choices in order to inform their practical decisions. Performances will show confident vocal and physical skills The quality of the students' performances will be assessed through their individual performance. Assessment will focus on Vocal and Physical Skills, Character and Communication and Artistic intentions. 

Spring

Scripted Play - Ernies Incredible Illucinations Students will be introduced to the play Ernies Incredible Illucinations and will explore it using drama skills. Students will learn how to analyse an authors intentions and present a character.  Drama skills will include responding, understanding artistic intentions, rehearsing, performing and understanding production elements.  Confident students who understand how theatre is created and performed for an audience. Performances of scenes will show effective and creative theatrical processes that consider both performer and audience. Students will be assessed through performances each lesson. Students will be assessed on their vocal and physical skills, character and communication and artistic intentions. Students will also be assessed each lesson on their ability to write about their experiences.

Summer

Morals and Fables - Devising

Students are introduced to the process of devising which is a key concept in Drama. Students will be given a starting point/stimulus to explore. By producing their own ideas students have ownership over their performances and therefore are more successful in performance. Students will take part in workshop rehearsals using explorative strategies such as hot-seating, monologues and freeze frames to develop their ideas and those of others by working collaboratively to produce a final performance piece. Confident students who understand how theatre is created and performed for an audience. Performances of devised pieces will show effective and creative theatrical processes that consider both performer and audience. Students will be assessed through their contribution to discussion and performance each lesson. Students will be assessed on their vocal and physical skills, character and communication and artistic intentions.

Summer

Musical Theatre Students will work creatively to develop their own performance pieces using their own choreography to bring to life a piece of well-known musical theatre.  Performance skills will include role-play, using the space, rehearsal and interaction with others. Students will be able to accurately and confidently perform movements and demonstrate the ability to use different choreographic skills as they produce a unique performance piece. The quality of the students' dance performances will be assessed in two ways, through their choreography and performance. Students' appreciation of performance will be assessed through written evaluations each lesson.

Mime

Using and developing mime performance skills as individuals and in small groups. Students will study the work of Frantic Assembly and how they use physicality in their plays.  Students will also show how they are able to use research effectively to plan a performance piece. Students will develop their mime skills and use them to present an accurate story of an historical event.

Practitioners Knowledge:   Students will study 6 different theatre practitioners (Stanislavski/Brecht/ Growtowski/Artaud/ Berkoff/Boal)  and will work creatively to develop their own performance piece in the style of their chosen practitioner. Confident students who are able to work well as individuals and with others. Performances will show confident vocal and physical skills and reflect the appropriate style.  The quality of the students' performances will be assessed through their individual performance. Assessment will focus on application of practitioners style. Students' appreciation of performance will be assessed through written evaluations each lesson. 

Summer

Shakespeare

Students will study Shakespeare’s, looking at key scenes from Th Tempest, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth and Much Ado About Nothing. Students will study the texts practically to promote creativity, confidence and ownership over the text studied. Performance skills will include use of vocal skills such as pace, pause, rhythm (Iambic pentameter) and physical skills such as gesture, body language and use of space alongside understanding script work, analysis, collaboration and focus. Confident understanding and presentation of the scenesstudied. Performances show creativity and a secure awareness of context and genre. Students' understanding of the text and performance skills will be assessed in the final practical performance.

Students will perform sections from a complete and substantial play text that requires them to question playwright intentions and how to communicate meaning through someone elses words. Students produce assured and secure performances with confident and committed characterisation. They show a comprehensive and coherent understanding of the chosen text. Students will be assessed by the teacher against the GCSE Component Two Criteria of Vocal and Physical Skills, Character and Communication and artistic intentions. Students perform their pieces to the class teacher for assessment.

Spring

Pop Culture Students will devise and perform as a whole class a Soap Opera performance that focuses on stereotypes and melodramatic performance skills.  Performance skills in this unit are devising, rehearsal, focus, role-play and a of range vocal and physical skills.  A final cohesive performance that is well rehearsed and understood by all the performers resulting in a well delivered and coherent production. Students' creative intentions and performance skills will be assessed through a final performance as a whole class.

Spring/Summer

Let Him Have It - Devising

This unit looks at Verbatim theatre and how we can use primary and secondary sources as stimuli. Students will explore the role of the audience and create characters who are representative of different views, a feature of Verbatim theatre. Students will develop credible roles and shape and structure work in a meaningful way.  Performance skills in this unit are devising, rehearsal, focus, role-play and a range of vocal and physical skills. Fully engaged performers who are well rehearsed and understand characters resulting in well delivered and coherent pieces that explore the issue of capital punishment. Students' creative intentions and performance skills will be assessed through a final performance.

Summer

Study of a Play Script Students will develop their performance skills by exploring and performing sections from a complete and substantial play text that requires them to question playwright intentions and how to communicate meaning through someone else’s words. Students produce assured and secure performances with confident and committed characterisation. They show a comprehensive and coherent understanding of the chosen text.  Students will be assessed by the teacher against the GCSE Component Two Criteria of Vocal and Physical Skills, Character and Communication and artistic intentions. Students perform their pieces to the class teacher for assessment.

Devising - Using a Theme Students will use devising and performance skills to explore chosen stimuli and produce a documentary response analysing their contribution to the process. Students will use prior knowledge, activities and feedback to develop assured and comprehensive performances suggested by a range of interesting and diverse stimuli. Students' practical skills will be assessed through a final performance of their devised piece to an audience. Students theoretical knowledge of how to create theatre will be assessed through a 2000 word portfolio evidencing the independent choices they made with regard to their devised performance and own characterisation.

Autumn

These pieces will be performed in the Christmas Showcase. Students will use prior knowledge, activities and feedback to develop assured and comprehensive performances suggested by a range of interesting and diverse stimuli.  Students' practical skills will be assessed through a final performance of their devised piece to an audience. Students theoretical knowledge of how to create theatre will be assessed through a portfolio evidencing the independent choices they made with regard to their devised performance and own characterisation. 

Spring

Component Three - Theatre Makers in Practice Students will study An Inspector Calls practically and theoretically in order to answer the set text question paper. Students will create their Live Performance notes in order to respond to live theatre analysis. Students' opinions and responses will demonstrate an assured and justified theatrical understanding of the text that uses key drama terminology, literacy skills and evaluation of Live performance. Students will answer mock/practice questions and papers and use teacher and peer assessment comments to independently strengthen their knowledge.

Summer

Component Two Performance from a Text Students study a complete and substantial play text and prepare to perform it for a visiting examiner in Year 11. Students produce assured and secure performances with confident and committed characterisation. They show a comprehensive and coherent understanding of their chosen text. Students will be assessed by the teacher against the GCSE Component Two Criteria of vocal and physical skills, character and communication and artistic intentions. Students will perform in the Summer Showcase.

Summer

Theatre Makers in Practice Students will revisit the text An Inspector Calls using practical activities, in order to develop written and analytical skills for Component Three - Theatre Makers in Practice. In order to demonstrate knowledge of how drama and theatre is developed and performed students will identify with and assume the roles of three theatrical people: The Actor, The Director and The Designer. Students will complete the activities and explorations sharing their opinions, thoughts and examples of the text and how they would act, direct or design for a production. Students responses will demonstrate an assured and justified theatrical understanding of the text that uses key drama terminology and literacy skills. Students will complete notes evaluating a Live performance. Students will be assessed on their verbal contributions to the lessons and the feedback they give to each other. Students will prepare answers to mock/practise questions and papers and use teacher and peer assessment comments to independently strengthen their knowledge.
